Sway bar end link problems are pretty apparent as when they typically "go" you will hear a fair amount of rattling/banging under the car when riding over small bumps on the road.

However even when quite worn out, I doubt you would feel any "sway" at all, nor would they contribute to sloppy steering.

I suspect your problem is elsewhere.

But worse is the feeling I am getting in the steering wheel when I'm not braking. It feels like something is loose. The steering feels sloppy and I feel like I could easily loose control of the vehicle at speeds beyond 60 MPH. I have taken it to a dealer near Atlanta and they charged me $85.00 to tell me nothing was wrong. Two weeks ago I took it to my dealer at home and I asked them to check the struts and the sway bar end links. They charged me $46.00 to tell me nothing is wrong. The service manager told me that the tech. who test drove the car could feel what I was talking about but he said everything was tight and looked o.k.

What should I do? I love my HHR but driving it has not been enjoyable since Thanksgiving 2012.

I'm going in this week to have the rotors machined again. I'd like to be prepared with something to tell the dealearship to do to fix whatever problem there is with the steering feel.

Please give me some advice. Thanks alot!!!

Hi jurisinceptor,

I can certainly understand your frustration with the issue you have described. I would be happy to assist you with another dealer appointment and remain involved throughout the process. If you would like me to investigate for you please private message me your full name, address, phone number, Vehicle Identification number, involved dealer and approximate mileage on your vehicle. Look forward to hearing from you:-)

A) Balance the wheels
B) Check the air pressure in your tires (too much will make the car fly at speed)
C) Adjust the rear brakes, especially if the parking brake clicks more than 3 times with a moderate pull.
D) Replace the brake pads, if you don't have worn out rotors. Could be just the pads are bad, not worn out (happened to me).

At 36K unlikely, but possible the control arm bushings are bad. Possible the struts are bad. Possible the Hub Bearings are are bad.

O.k. - went to the dealership today. Had the rotors turned again. They checked thickness first. While up, they again checked the entire front end, found nothing wrong for the third time.

Good news - turning the rotors seems to have solved the problem.

Thank you all for your great advice.

They checked the control arm bushings today and the struts. Everything checked out. The pads are new as of about 1 month ago - AC Delco Durastop ceramic. I'm gonna have the rear drums cleaned and adjusted at next oil change.

Thank you!!

To avoid future occurrences of brake judder on the front end, adjust the rears at every oil change or 5,000 miles.

Here's a thread on how to adjust 'em up yourself....

I don't remember if it's in that hread or not, but it is important to mention again & again; THE HAND BRAKE SHOULD ONLY HAVE ABOUT 3 CLICKS WITH A MODERATE PULL. Otherwise the rears need adjusting.

I have a 2007 hhr that I have resently replaced the front rotors and pads but now it has developed a shudder, especially when I'm braking. I thought that the steering column was coming loose but after reading this post, I not sure. Any thoughts?

Thanks

Did you read all the previous posts in this thread? If you replaced the brakes yourself, did you clean the new rotors before assembly?
