Powell Race Shop YYZ Springs Review Thread

so i've stopped being lazy and decided to put this thread together, i also made sure i got moderator permission to post this. let's keep this thread clean..... onto my review.

A couple weeks ago the Powell Race Shop YYZ springs were installed on my HHR SS. I’m absolutely in love with these springs. Here are a couple posts from another forum…..

Think about it: 350 lbs heavier at the rear, close to 900 lbs solid load on the rear spring,
1/2 inch lower trim height all around compared to stock springs.
rides and handles awesome. Whats not to like?

The rear doesn’t squat anywhere near as bad as it did with Pedders when going WOT and so it feels like the weight shift is handled very nicely by these springs. Of course if you’re a drag racer those little drag bags or junior size footballs will still make a huge difference.

i just want to thank John for creating such amazing parts for our platform! :twothumbs

after getting used to the track and style of driving that was required my confidence soared and i know it was from these springs. after the first out of four sessions, i really got used to the feel of the HHR and improved the handling was, which allowed me to push the limits more and more. now all i need is a bigger rear bar & stickier tires.

Now onto some pictures….

Before

The springs

Installed by some old guy……

After

Instant drop is around ½ - 5/8” and after a couple weeks it seems to have stayed that way. Currently the wheel gap in the front is 1.5” and the rear is 2.5”. I’m running 225/45/18 Goodyear Eagle GT tires. Going over the speed bumps in my neighborhood is no issue now and barely any noise coming from the rear, when there is noise it’s not from the suspension but from random things I have in the rear cargo area.

For pricing/ordering/technical specs/information please contact Powell Race Shop as I’m not allowed to discuss any of that on the forum due to PRS not being a vendor. Their emails are gloria@powellraceshop.com or john@powellraceshop.com

Thanks, ive been waiting for someone else to be the guinea pig for these springs. Very pleased to hear they handle the extra weight well. The drop looks great too. Sigh, something else to add to my shopping list.

Are you still on stock struts? Curious to see how that works for you, or if you needed to go to Konis or something a bit better. Looks great, and thanks for the review.

yes i'm on stock struts/shocks, my bad, should've included in the OP. according to John Powell, stock FE5 struts/shocks (the ones found on the HHR SS & Cobalt SS Turbo, btw there is a difference in rear shocks between the two) are perfectly fine for simple every day driving BUT if you're an avid autox or road course racer then upgrading to a set of Konis in the rear would be recommended. if you can swing it financially, get the fronts too. just a heads up about the Konis, you'll need to annually send them back for revalving (i think that's the terminology used), so keeping a spare stock set while those are out would be smart.

after my track experience at NJMP, i'm really considering getting into it and atleast doing about 3 track days a year..... so i'll probably scoop up some Koni rear shocks over the winter.

i don't mind at all. post some before/after pics and your opinion of how they ride/handle.

and yea.... this thread has been quiet. seems like it's getting enough views, i guess no one has questions or comments. you're probably right, it's not enough low for most people.
