quick strut noise

Well i installed these unity brand new quick struts on my hhr and when i turn my wheel to drivers side and here it creaking ,so i check it out and i can move the spring inside the strut about a quarter of a inch back and forth creating the same sound... Well should i tighten the center bolt on strut? I am not a suspension guru but i am pissed and should not be doing this ,i do have a lifetime warranty on them ,any input on this will help me ...

You may have gotton hold of an earlier run of the struts fitted with the wrong spring, Monroe fixed the issue so check the boxes if you still have them.

You need to check the boxes for an asterisk (*) after the part number.

The correct part numbers are 172179L* and 172179R* for LS and LT model HHR's.

If you got Quick-Strut assemblies and the boxes do not have an asterisk after the part number, return them for replacement because they do not have the correct springs.

I got this info from a Monroe-Tenneco tech rep back in March.

Aw shoot!

My apologies hurst, there have been so many issues and questions with the Monroe struts that my brain just didn't see "Unity", but your best bet is to call their tech people to report your problem.

Here's their contact info if you need it....

Telephone: 561-450-7394
Toll Free: 855-UNITY-AP

Along these lines. I have a pair of Monroes in the garage, the asterisk is under the part number and easy to miss.

Made me look!

I would not be tightening the nut unless it seems loose. You didn't get them from one of the places that says you need to have them installed in a shop to get warranty, I hope.
I sure am glad I decided on the Monroes, instead of the Unitys. Something in my tiny brain told me.
Not to defend or bash a brand, but Unity is what's called a "collision replacement" brand. Not intended to be put on a vehicle that you want to keep long term. They are meant to get the car out the wholesaler's door cheap and fast.

Thanks guys a little update got off the phone with there tech and i rip them a new one because i was angry so he said to tight the nut down to 44 ft pounds which im going to do friday and also replace the outer tie rod .. I found the outer tie-rod brand dezza which comes with a zerk fitting from rock auto 15.00 dolllars apiece not bad... Also guy from unity said if that don't work they will replace it period.. the only reason i went with them because i got about 165,000 on her not sure how long were going to hold on to her ,but it is a great car just general maintenance ..Well luckily i did not go for a alignment yet which i know im going to need ,the struts seem very good and i didn't go with monroe because with my luck i would get the ones with the spring problem thur mail order ,other then that i will keep you posted

Keep us posted, replacing the same strut twice isn't any fun, but hopefully it'll cure the problem.

Well i replaced the drivers side strut today torque to specs again with the one they sent me and i still get the creaking low pitch noise on drivers not the passenger .. lower control arms replaced about 4 month ago and also did a check on tie rods tight by shaking the wheel, the noise seems to be at the end of steering wheel toward the bottom. Well im thinking maybe something with the sway bar bushings those were replaced two years ago gm parts,or maybe the joint were the steering rod connect after the firewall ,maybe needs lube or tightening.. anyway im going to the alignment shop to see if they can find anything... I have check the steering rack boots are perfect no tears not sure why it creaks.. any inputs please thanks
