So, who has actually replaced these with OEM fit parts or some cobbled replacement? Does it take a spring compressor to get to the top of the spring?

 

They are sold new. No compressor for the rears, yes for the front.

On the rear; remove the shocks then lever the the axle beam down.

Don't forget the rear brake hose brackets you'll need a 10 mm wrench or socket

Has anyone ever tried to find a urethane alternative to the felt spring insulator? I use to own MK4 VWs and the first thing I upgraded when I replaced shocks and struts were the insulators to urethane.

I have sent emails to a few companies (Energy Suspension, Prothane Suspension), and am waiting for their reply. I'll let everyone know what they say.

It should be just a matter of finding the insulator with the correct inner diameter to fit the bumper and spring coil.
