Hello all. I have had this little noise when I turn left that sounds like rubber is rubbing on something inside the steering column or something. It seems to be getting loud. The car has less than 20k miles on it. It is a 2008. Any ideas on where to start?

Just to eliminate a possible cause, turn your wheels to full lock and look under your fender on that side to make sure nothing has come loose, like the finder liner.

If that's secure, its time to get inverted, wiggle into the footwell and look up under the steering column with a flashlight, something may be rubbing under your dash.

Let us know how you make out.

 

you still have stock wheels/rims? if they are aftermarket they could be rubbing

 

Thanx for popping in guys! I put it on ramps and looked around, I saw no areas where there could have been doing any rubbing. I have the stock tires/wheels. Then I looked under the dash. The boot where the steering shaft goes through the firewall was kind of folded. I poked it around a tad & sprayed it with WD-40. Then it was gone. Then after a bit if driving it came back. Hopefully I can put some real grease in there and see if that fixes is it permanently.

Try a Silicone spray lubricant, that works like a charm on squeaky rubber parts, and you can also use it on things like your sway bar bushings to keep them nice and quiet.

 

I am glad to read you have been able to find the source of your noise concerns. Please, let us know how things go and what you have decided to use to get this taken care of.

 

The attack of the crappy hub bearings...

 

I'm thinking there might be a bearing that is under the rubber boot at the firewall..

Maybe I'm wrong, but just can't see a rubber boot being the only thing on the steering shaft there..

 

My husband found the noise in my 2006 Hhr on the left side was the strut upper bearing thank god no noises now.

 

Just a thought, the CV boots rubbing? My replacement axles seem to make a rubber rubbing noise.
