Auto Trans Check Plug - Where Is It?
Auto Trans Check Plug - Where Is It?
2011 Auto Trans, Can someone tell me specifically where the check plug is located and what does it look like. I have used the search and nowhere do I see any specific's. The care is on jack stands and level. From the passenger side I can see a slotted plug just above where the axle shaft exits from the trans, it takes approx. a 6 mm or 1/4 inch open end wrench. Looks more like a special tool would work better. The other possibility I see is on the back side of the trans about half way up just in front of the exhaust manifold pipe. This is a flat plug with slots on either side, approx. 23 mm. My 24 was too big and my 22 was too small.
I would appreciate a confirmation on which one or if I'm way off base. Thanks for the help.
And by the way, this seems to be a great forum. Been searching for days and found a lot of good info.

P.S. The reason I have to check the trans fluid....

The wife's HHR is now the 18 year old grandson's HHR. It appears he ran over something and put a very small hole in the front of the pan. I picked up some Permetex liquid steel apoxy and patched the hole and added 7 qt's of ATF. And got the car back to the house. All forward gears shift fine, but no reverse. Just hoping at this point it might get better after checking the ATF level.
On the brighter side, the grandson and I now have an opportunity to work the car together.

Yes, I've seen this diagram many times in my searches but it's confusing at best since the check plug arrow is pointing at the bottom of the trans. On my 2011 trans, located above where the arrow in the diagram is pointing, there is an electrical plug that is held in place with a type of fork that is held in place by a stud that looks like an 11 mm nut on the stud.
Any of this sound right?

No, the fluid level check plug is under the drive axle on the passenger side of the HHR, it is a small 11mm plug, be ready for fluid to pour out, if the transmission wasn’t drained and you didn’t replace the filter, those 7 litres you poured in will have over filled the transmission.
I suggest you remove the pan, change the filter , install a new pan, pour in 6.5 litres and warm up the transmission and then pull the inspection plug and top up the transmission fluid. I just don’t trust that install metal in a bottle, especially around transmission fluid , because of it high level of detergents.
while you already have it on jack stands, here’s a how to

Latest update, we used the used the electrical plug (looks to be some kind of temp sensor) to check the fluid level. I estimate there's 12 qts of ATF added in total. Grandson reports it is up shifting better, no more delays in the shifts, but still no reverse. I will take another look for an 11 mm plug under the axle on pass. side.
Any other options for checking the no reverse? If we do need to find a used trans what trans number should I be asking about? I'm sure these trans came in many different Chevy models, do I need one out of an HHR or will any trans work?
Thanks for the help,
