Do I "NEED" the special 32mm to remove the oil filter?

Unless someone went nuts and torqued it down to 100ft lbs, or more likely, cross threaded it. Plan on getting a replacement cap hhrumadbruh, because it'll probably be damaged from the over torquing or cross threading.

hhrumadbruh- Yes counter-clockwise rotation to remove..

"Lefty loosey, Rightee tightee"..

When you finally get the plastic cap off w/filter, check & make sure there are no plastic slivers or shavings off the threads, etc in the filter housing, that may have dropped in while removing it..

Don't need any of that floating thru the engine..

Sure sounds to be Cross threaded. But caps are cheap..

This is what it should look like..(see pic) I always wind mine in by "hand only" then put my shorty socket on & give it a final snug down..

No chance of cross threading like that..

Even though I had my oil changed yesterday by the dealer, I still backed the cap off a bit when the engine had cooled, then gave it a snug down to my liking...and yes they had over done it a bit.

1 1/4 socket will work too.

The dealer really torqued mine down. I also tried an open end, no dice. The local parts stores sell the specific shallow socket for about $10, much cheaper than I thought, so its a no-brainer buy.
However even with the proper socket on a ratchet, I couldnt budge it. I had to use a pipe on the ratchet for more leverage. No way it should have been tightened like that.

My metric set didn't go up high enough. I use a 1 1/4 as well.
