How can one know if the chain is good, when a guide is broken? It wouldn't have the proper tension on it. The tensioner might be taking up the slack. Probably should remove the tensioner, reset it, etc. after installing the new guide?

Oh yes. I had no intention of reusing any chain or other parts.
I have a new Cloyes kit for both chains and the guides.
I would never open up the front timing cover without replacing the works.
I am also replacing both VVT actuators.
