Better Air Intake Setup?

This is my attempt to add a better air intake system than factory (if possible) to my 2008 2.2 HHR.

This is a 3 inch Corvette fresh air intake available on eBay for $50-60 with the two filters. My plan was to cut a hole in the aluminum pipe to accept the MAF sensor. So far so good; fits perfectly. Then I

1. Started the car and it bogged down and stalled.

2. Unplugged the MAF and it started and ran well.

3. Plugged in the MAF and it ran great.

4. But when I shut it off and started it again with MAF plugged in it bogged down and stalled.

What did I do wrong? Did I put the MAF sensor to far from engine air intake?

The MAF sensor fits in the new pipe with room to spare and isn't shorted out in any way.

MAF sensor is fine because when I hooked the factory stuff back up it ran and the "check engine" light went off.

There are a lot of smart guys on this forum hope to hear from you.

Were did you put the maf in the pipe . in the pic it looks like you cut a place on the right side ? and if that it mabe it needs to be more over by were the two comes togeter. Also I would look at wear it is on the car it is made for (aka the vette) ?. Also i know you dont need to be cutting a lot of hole in your new pice, I would go to home depot or lowes fine a pice of pluming PVC that you can you as a test pipe. Hope this helps.

is the piping the same size as the stock intake? if its not it wont register properly on the maf and cause it to idle rough or stall

I self-tapped a couple of holes and mounted the MAF sensor where you see the hole on the right side of the pipe below. The corvette pipe is a larger diameter than stock, its 3 inch.

Simply put. You have a MAF(Mass Air Flow)senor mounted on only 1 side of a Y pipe. Seems that it would only be "sensing" half of the normal air flow if mounted on just 1 side. That alone ought to really screw up the readings it's getting and sending.
Also a larger diameter pipe will create slower flow per the same air volume.

Sounds like your MAF sensor is just confused by the weird readings it's now getting.
I would bet the MAF needs to be located where the Y pipe merges to 1 pipe.

Thanks all,

The corvette had a tube sticking out that I cut off and enlarged the hole to accept the HHR MAF sensor. That is why I put it there. Probably a mistake.

There is a 6 inch piece of hose that goes from the end of the Y to the engine intake. I'll replace it with a metal pipe and make a hole in that and try again.

I drove it around the block with the corvette pipe hooked up and it sounds great; completely different especially when you hit the gas.

I'll be busy for a week or so but when I redo the MAF sensor and/or get it
working properly I will let you know.
