How safe is it on the 2010 HHR 2.2L Automatic to switch into neutral and back into drive while the car is in motion?

I used to do this in my 99 corolla auto and didnt have a problem, but I'm pretty sure the manual for the HHR specifically says not to.

Anyones experience on this matter? Had to replace/rebuild your transmission lately?

Whether it would cause long term damage is debatable, Hydramatic transmissions are overbuilt to an extent.

But whether you'd see anything more than a slight gain over coasting in gear is hard to quantify. One thing to keep in mind, coasting in neutral is illegal in many states, and an accidental shift into reverse(its happened)...will cause considerable damage to the transmission.
