08 2.2L non-vvt only intake cam sensor. Only needs 1 to monitor the timing chain.

I think maybe I already knew that. And forgot. Been awhile since I sold the 2008. Maybe I woulda remebered had I looked up P0016 description. My first thought was, "Wouldn't it be nice to know which cam was off?" But what difference would it make?

Off to edit my comment.

bought a scanner off Amazon for my wife's Jetta a couple weeks ago and used it to scan the HHR before I disconnected the battery to replace the starter. I pulled 1 code and it read camshaft sensor implausible signal something along those lines. I might have a pic of the code. I will check. While picking up the starter I remembered camshaft sensor so I grabbed one and tossed it in. After reading many many posts I realized this won't work because it needs a relearn.

The P0016 pending might come from diddling around with the crank sensor. Worry when it sets the CEL .
Why did you replace it to begin with? Crank or cam? crank needs relearn cam does not, neither fail frequently.
Did you look at the chain while turning the engine?
I wouldn't have disconnected the battery had I known the codes and any hope of making this easier on myself get thrown right out the window.
I Didn't turn the engine while looking at the chain. P0016 code scared me. All BS aside I've completely drained 2 full batteries trying to get this car started so at this point what's done is done. There's been no foreign noises while turning it over.

You could check for bent valves with a cylinder leak down test.

I will definitely be checking for bent valves before I turn it over again. If I dropped a camera down the spark plug hole to look at the top of the pistons. Would there have been enough of an impact to have left a mark? Had some serious rain and hail here today so tomorrow I will get into it.

Just a thought.
Would the oil pressure sensor have any affect on my situation? The old starter and surrounding areas was completely caked with oil. It looks like 2 sensors sit above the starter.

Never bother even reading the crap scanners spew. The number is what counts. The titles and descriptions of the tests rarely indicate what the purpose of the test is and then some "English as a third language" person That has never even seen an automobile translates it to something like English. Have you ever read a response from China on eBay?

Alright, got a break in Thunder storms today and went back out to look into the timing chain with a little better idea of what to do. The chain definitely has some slack to it. Before ordering a timing kit I want to look into the valves. I don't have access to air for a leak down test. Don't want to turn it over for a compression test. If I removed the intake manifold could I get a good enough look at the valves? I suppose I will find out.

Since you will be ordering a timing chain kit I suggest 9-4201S and 9-4202s from Cloyes we have a new discount code for Rock Auto.
first remove the valve cover, then remove both camshafts , look to ensure all valves are full pulled up by the valve springs, any that are lower are bent valves. Then you’ll need to order new valves valve guide seals and head gasket kit.
This kit is pretty comprehensive for getting the job done
