2006 hhr wont start, but cranks

So this morning, my car started after some struggle, then shut off. Then I started it again, and it rattled, but eventually cleared, so I drove to work. Then later the car wouldn't start at all. The crank turns, but it won't turn over. I don't think it's the battery, what could it be?

The code reader thing didn't work, so i don't know?

Hi Jacob, to the forums!!

Man, it could be a number of things. Why do you think it's not the battery? What do you mean, the code reader didn't work?

"The crank turns, but it won't turn over." - trying to decipher what that means - it does AND it doesn't???? Please clarify what you mean.

Welcome to the site, if the battery is new or not so old, then check the ground wires, the power wire at the fuse box and the starter, ensuring they are snug and tight.
The upper and lower underhood fuse box might be loose.
It could be a failing fuel pump not holding Prime.
Please have a look and check these out and get back to us
If the code reader OBD II port is not working check the power outlet on the waterfall, it’s the same fuse.
