Well the good news is it cranked up and seemed to be running good although it still had the chain rattle at startup (maybe because there wasn't any oil in the tensioner yet?). The bad news is I heard a noise and the battery light came on. Got out of the car to find the belt had flown off and there was oil flying around. Any ideas on the oil leak. I was thinking maybe the crank seal or the timing cover gasket. I couldn't tell where it was coming from and I'm burned out for today.

Perhaps the harmonic balancer wasn’t torqued correctly or the seal was damaged.

So t was the crank seal leaking. I replaced it and put the belt back on and all is well.

Don't be tempted to use "High Mileage" oil; that will play heck with the rubber seals and endanger the cat.
I'm new here so pardon me if this is explained elsewhere... what kind of oil should be used? I've never heard of high mileage oil causing problems.

5W30 Dexos full synthetic oil, the brand is up to you. Some love Penzoil, some Mobile 1 others like Castrol.
the high mileage oils can effect the seals and piston rings.

High mileage oils have extra heavy metals like zinc that destroy catalytic converters when burned. They also expand the rubber seals, if you ever use conventional again the seals will shrink, causing seal problems.
