Ok, finally an ending to this story. GM place replaced all the timing components, no need for a new engine after all. Saved me over $3k. More details when I have a chance.

Telling that you need new engine without checking compression first, does say a lot about mechanic. Run away from him.

I missed something here. Didn't he say the engine was using oil ?
How does fixing a timing issue cure the oil thing ?

I wish I had the technical knowledge to explain it as it was explained to me, but everything centered around the timing chain/components. The GM mechanic gave me a full run down of what they did and gave the rings and valve guides a clear bill of heath, but I am keeping a close eye on the oil (both volume and quality) and will take it back at the first sign of anything janky. I appreciate all the input I got here, y'all were instrumental in saving me much dinero and keeping me in my HHR.
