I use D1Minis with a latching circuit that is triggered by a sensor; That powers the D1 up then it does whatever I want it to do then turns off. Draws no power when standing by.
The latching circuit uses 2 NPN transistor, a P-mosfet and a few resistors and a capacitor. The D1 has wifi so it can connect to your router.
I have mine connecting to a node-red server. It is all here: https://github.com/donbrew1/mailAlert/tree/e2ab662988a48b33410e65e50ed17104c2200c6ft. My Arduino sketches are not elegant but they work.
You could easily set your piezo off for a specified time and send you an email or text.

The home security cams are getting smarter about discerning animals from people. And they provide video evidence. Chose carefully. A infrared or otherwise illuminated model won't work well from inside a window.
