I'm not sure that is absolutely correct.

About 10 years ago, I re-created custom brass doors for a fireplace in my family room. The old tempered glass inserts were taken to a large local glass company here and they recut the inserts to my spec.s' (which was a slight adjustment do to my error in metal working ). Now, maybe it was new glass...I can't say for sure. But, I was told they had to "re-temper" the glass to "cut" to the correct size. And at that time, the expense was minimal....something like $65.

 

If you can't cut auto glass, how did the customizers do it when they needed to redo the glass in a chopped top car?

Yes, you can...although it is difficult to do. Scroll down to the Buick article. You could also have Polycarbonate windows made.

 

YOU CANNOT CUT TEMPERED GLASS. go find a piece of tempered glass and try to cut it. Go into an automotive glass shop and ask somebody to cut it. They will tell you, you cannot cut tempered glass. They talked about cutting laminated windshields down to size, but no claims of cutting temprered. AS for the fireplace glass..as i mentioned previously, you suplly your old tempered glass to some glass shop..they make a cardboard or paper pattern...they then cut the glass from PLATE glass AND THEN SEND IT OUT TO A GLASS TEMPERING FACILITY where you get charged a fee of about $40 and up depending on square footage.

 

Why are you yelling? Excuse me for not noticing the difference between the laminated windshield as opposed to the tempered rear. I guess his solution would be to find a laminated windshield with similar dimensional characteristics and cut that, or go the polycarbonate route. I didn't see the part about tempered glass until I went back and read all the article. I guess in my haste in trying to help this guy, I overlooked it.

 

who is yelling? i thought i could only type on a computer. Some parts i typed in capitals so as to hi-lite . I added details to my reply so that i could help him out and not waste his time or money on trying to do something thats not possible. Now with these articles i gave him, he has plenty of info.

 

Ordinarily I would agree with you based on experience but now I tempted to find a piece of glass just to try a waterjet cut on. True,normal cutting methods don't work on tempered glass but a waterjet cuts with abrasive water under high pressure. It`s like trying to drill hardened steel which is next to impossible but you can drill it with and abrasive quite easily.

Is there any way to cut a toughened glass kitchen splash back ? Preferebly on site.

If so could someone please let me know the process and what equipment I will need to use ?

In order to cut tempered glass it has to be untempered. To do this it has to be heated in a furnace to close to the melting point and then cooled. Trying to cut or saw tempered will result in it breaking. Check with a glass bending/laminating co in your area they will have the furnace for this.
