I've seen a few of these oil threads in these forums now. I find one thing very amusing. I think it's incredible how so many Americans have such a huge problem with oil companies. Everyone seems to hate them. What I find ironic (and hence amusing) is that the United States is the largest user, and importer, of oil. Everyone loves to hate and complain about being screwed by oil companies but noone wants to cut back, or dare I say give up, their oil usage.

Oil is probably the most inelastic commodity on earth. With that come huge price shocks. Also, the majority of the worlds oil stocks are in the hands of a few large corporations. I see nothing wrong with what these corporations are doing. They have realized that they own such a commodity and that people are not will to be without it and hence they are "laughing all the way to the banks."

Complaining will do no good. Reducing usage will send a message to the large corporations. Until a reduction happens the guys are going to keep cashing in.

I work in the oil and gas industry as a geologist and there are so many factors that drive up the price. One of the most important factors right now is that it makes a lot more sense to leave the oil or gas in the ground and not produce it because you can get a higher price in a few weeks or months. A project I was working on found a new gas pool. A decision was made to leave the gas in place until the winter because gas prices with be able double what they are now. This isn't an unfair practice, it's cashing in at the right time.

here is how it works in my opinion

1 bush lets the terrorists slam into the twin towers then uses fear tactics to get everyone to jump on his band wagon to go to war which makes him and chaney millions owning stock in defence companies that build stuff like tanks etc.. (just like daddy did in the late 80`s)

2 the big oil backers see it work for him (bush) so they create BS propaganda about shortages useing the war in middle east, hurricanes, now a bs leaky pipeline etc.. to create this shortage scare (scare tactics) to ram the prices through the roof!!

Its all greed and BS that are own country is going to use to turn the USA into another 3rd world country!! I hate to say it but it is happening every day!!

My brother in law hauls gas for a living and remmember back when the prices shot up over the hurricane that hit New Orleans he told me the powers that be cut their deliveries in half from 2 trips a week to one to make it appear as though there was a shortage (pumps at the station goin empty) to support them jackin the prices! while he told me at the tank sites where he filled his semi the fuel tanks were overflowing and there was no reason for the hikes other than GREED!!!!

Just a heads up he told me dont be supprised to see 4-5 dollars a gallon by winter!!

Don't you mean when Bush let the hurricane hit New Orleans? He had just about as much control over that as he did when he 'let the terrorist slam into the twin towers'.

And this is why I don't get into political discussions on the internet.

Try not to forget that all of us don't agree with your opinions. You do have a right to it but try to remember that it is just your opinion.

The current problem with the USA? Blind party loyalty and a general lack of awareness. Sad to say, but American's are more interested in American Idol than the United States of America. Captain Howdy is correct, independent of party, politics is a bunch of BS. Yes, the U.S. is still a great country, but each and every one of us needs to hold our leaders accountable so we can keep it this way.

By the way, I do not believe Bush let the hurricane hit New Orleans. However, it is fact that his administration's inadequate planning and his slow response cost thousands of people their lives. How ironic that right before the 2004 election, Miami-Dade county received millions in hurricane relief from FEMA for hurricane Frances - Miami wasn't even impacted by the storm. Here is the link to the Sun-Sentinel newspaper - I doubt any one really cares since if it wasn't sold on Fox "news" it can't be true.

I guess an upcoming election and a high-density population area in a pivotal state makes hurricane "damage" pretty wide-spread (and no, I don't think Democrats are immune to such shenanigans - in this case, however, the Republicans bought votes at tax payer expense - any way you slice it, that should anger every American, independent of party. This is an example when every American, ALL OF US, are responsible for holding our leaders accountable and saying we demand our country be led with ethics and integrity.).

By the way, American Idol auditions have just started!!! http://www.americanidol.com/ Our country is GREAT again!

You will never see prices like you once saw them. Go overseas, they would be happy to pay what we pay. Sucks, you bet it does. I remember paying $1.50 a gallon 26/27 years ago. And I made a whole lot less than I do now. You can blame who ever you want, it's only going to affect your own blood pressure.

Oh, please. Every thinking American knows for a fact that FOX News is Fair and Balanced.

All this whining about gas prices is amusing. The US consumes something like 25% of the world's energy, with, IIRC, 5% of the population. Yet some people in the US of A somehow think they're entitled to as much cheap gas as they can pour on the ground. You think prices are high now? Hang in there, folks - in less than a decade, it will be ten bucks a gallon.

As a side note, it's equally amusing to look at the classified autos/trucks for sale. You can pick up a luxurious gas hog real cheap right now, if you're dumb enough to go for it. People can't give away their Expeditions and Hemis.
