Wow, just made a couple trips across town with 900lbs of laminate flooring, no broken springs here.

 

Same thing happend to me today at my inspection but only one was broken. It's a 2006 with 140k. How difficult is it to change out can I do it myself? Monroe Muffler wants $310 to replace both sides not including the shocks

 

If you have a floor jack AND JACK STANDS, you can do the job in 1-2 hours. There is a How-To on how to change the rear springs in that section. Parts are $60-$100 a pair (recommended) depending on where you buy them. And on a scale of 1-10, 10 being the most difficult, it's a 4-5. maybe less if you are handy.

my rear coil is broken, meaning there is a cut.
is there difference in rear coil springs. noticed that they are sold as 2006-2009 and newer. what do you recommend to replace as STOCK, not lowering springs. as much load carry capacity as possible, as durable as possible?

You didn't post what year and model you have(LS, LT, 2LT, SS) Yes, there are different stock springs.

 

From what i have seen any rear springs from any hhr will fit, the ss springs will be a bit lower.
For carrying a load I would stay with original ls/LT springs or a direct replacement.
You may find a local company to make stronger springs also. I bought lower springs from Canucks Motorsports and felt they were a little soft, after talking to them they sent me some that were stiffer.
