Clutch Going on my '08 SS 143,000 miles
Thanks all! I'll check the firewall. The plot has thickened in that the second axle seal my mechanic put in after the first made the leak worse not better has also failed to fix the leak which is now substantial - leaving 12" spots. So I now need to find a transmission shop that will work on the thing, leak & clutch.
The seals are very different in the SS 5speed transmission

Needing to push the pedal down farther is not a sign of a worn out clutch. A worn out clutch will do the opposite. It will release early. Surely it's one of the other causes already mentioned. The first thing I would do is is make sure that the master cylinder reservoir have enough fluid. Has it ever been low? If so, there could be some air in the system.
My SS clutch has engaged really close to the floor since I bought it a few years ago, and grinds a bit going into third gear if I'm not easy with it. I'd pretty much gotten used to it, but often wondered what was going on.
I finally found a shop that I trust to work on this beast, and took it to them to fix a leaking brake cylinder and to replace all four tpms sensors, since one is failing, and I expect the rest will soon follow. While they have it I decided to have them take a look at the clutch. Turns out it's a leaking slave cylinder. As @donbrew mentioned above, labor for a clutch R&R is nearly 8 hours.
Given that, I'm having them put in a new clutch as long as it's apart. They didn't mention new cables though. They will be doing the clutch tomorrow (Monday), so I'll give them a call in the morning and ask if they advise replacing those as well.
