CRACKED BLOCKs & Head Gasekts, what years and which motors

I've read some regarding the Leaking Coolant issues, and some turn to be a head gasket and some are a cracked block.

I wondering Exactly What model years and motors are affected by the Cracked Block which seem to be at the water pump due to Casting Porosity.

And what experience has been learned re cylinder head issues.
I would appreciate anyone's experience

I have a 2007 Panel with the 2.4 L motor that I purchased new. At 86k miles, not a singe issue except the brakes, that my Chevy repaired three times,,,, still horrible.

To the point. i recently purchased a close friends Company HHR Car (for a fantasist price) that he drove since it was new. A few months after his retirement this 2009 2.2 Panels motor frothed with the water in the Oil,,, milk shake.

Unfortunately the Chevy dealer completed ZERO tests of any kind prior to removing the cylinder head and worse - discarded the head gasket, Grrrr

I'm going to take the now clean cylinder head into a auto machine for a pressure test and etc.. I hoping that I have a damaged head...

Thanks....

Porosity in the block 2008 , 2009 2.0 Turbo SS engines.
Head gaskets pretty much any year, any displacement.
Warped head issues, not really common
I had the head replaced under the 3 year bumper to bumper warranty, it wasn't warped just a hair line crack between the intake valves in #2 cylinder.

As for your brake issues

donbrew, thanks..

Oldblue. Thanks. I'm hoping its the head / gasket. All of the info I've read so far is the 2.0 L turbos.

re the cracked head, Did you get it welded ?

SS rotors etc. Yep, Read some of that too. I've got left over C4 & C5 Corvette calipers and rotors in my parts bins I'm going to mock up on a set for spare front HHR spindles. Since I've got the parts, I might as well give it a try. Luckily I've got several close friend with lathes and mills

Thanks,,,

Wheels, bolt patterns? I seriously doubt that C4 or C5 bolt pattern is 5X110, or the offset will work, or the wheel size will work. But go ahead, let us know.

The dealership replaced the head under warranty, N/C .
That was at a tender 56,000 miles, I've now got 211,000 on the clock

Oh, Don, Lasater put Corvette brakes on his V8 panel, page #64, post #632 and 634
Mind he has 18 inch rims, the SS non Brembos fit inside the stock 16 inch steelies!!

If you want some serious whoa power inside of stock SS 18 inch rims then check out MississippiSunburst, 14 inch rotors kit. Page #2 post 14! Now they are some serious anchors!!

Oldblue.

Ah, lucky you re the cyl head !!

I'm hoping that the cyl head is my only prob. And since the motor has the head off and chain cover, I might pull the H2O pump & look for a crack. And that will be based what the cyl head condition result are at the Machine shop.

Re the typical block cracks around the water pump area. Any experience on if they might be readily visible ??

Brakes,,

I'll prob go with 13" C4 rotors up front and 12" rotor in the rear. Now that would be the Gen "S2" brake parts F&R, '88 up.... Better front calipers and E-brake mech too.

Yes, I've seen Lasiter's photo's re the C5 brakes, He did a real nice job. But, I've got the C4 S2 calipers, caliper slide brackets and rotors, and their a leap above the OEM HHR brakes. I have two C5 Vette's and I did remove a wheel and take a close look. The C5 & C6 calipers are very appealing to the Eye...

I did some basic fitment on the HHR , and all looks very clean. Plus I have a few sets of Vette Wheels & Tires, C4, C5 & C6, and I'm prob going to go with a C4 wheel and drill the HHR hubs. We already did a clearance check with two different sets of 17" C4 wheels and tires. A wee bit tight, but clears.... But the brake / wheels are on my D/D Panel, not this one with the coolant issues....

I'll post the brake and wheel swap on a new post once I get a little more caught up on my projects....

thanks..

Actually, I don't think I've ever heard of that being talked about on this forum.

Now the SS LNF 2.0L and porosity issues. Yeah, very familiar with that discussion. It usually results with block cracking between the cylinders in the water jacket.

There is a TSB about putting Teflon tape on one of the bolts for the pump on some years. Evidently 1 of the holes got drilled through. NOT a crack.
