that's huge, to not worry about the powertrain until 2012 or 100K miles.
I would be all over that.
I took that into consideration. But considering it is only powertrain, I still choose a '06. The powertrain is the least of my concerns for longevity. I still got almost all the options I wanted, and have already upgraded so that I now have them. The $2K+ cheaper overall price made it even easier.

Plus, they discontinued the color I wanted.

well I for one was stung by a transmission rebuild I had to do on my 98 Z28 with only 41K on the clock and the car was less than 3 years old. I am not a racer and there was no discernible reason why the tranny went out on me. One day it just would not go into 2nd gear. So to me, that extended powertrain warranty that GM is offering now is very important.

You never know what can or will happen to a new car. Longer warranty is definately no a bad thing, don't get me wrong. Just the odds are you will not have an issue with the powertrain during the 5/100 warranty. GM did their homework and they is why they now include that. Looks good to the consumer.

Also, a concerned shopper could take the savings and put it aside for a rainy day, but who would?

Solman.....

It really depends on how long you're going to keep the car.

Your 06' already has a minimum $2000 depreciation (used my car in Kelly BB with best case scenario), at the resale level....more depreciation for private and trade in level. The 07' has much less, especially if you know how to negotiate (I can get you a 5% discount, on an 07', for just being a "friend"), so you at least would be even.

But, if your keeping the car for a couple, 3 years, it's probably a wash.

And, if you got exactly what you want...color, etc., and it is not available on the 07', that counts as something.

But, the main thing is you are happy with the deal and have no regrets.

No regreats, I keep my vehicles for many many years. I get my $$$ worth.

For S&G's I went to KBB and loaded mine in. SRV is $1,300 more than I paid for it. Granted, I could not sell for that. Wanted to compare that to a '07 with the same used mileage, not available yet. And yes, I did look up the used value.

I bought a GMPP extended warranty to cover the part of my lease that was not covered by the base 3 year warranty.

I purchased the same warranty for my previous car, and about a month before I gave it back to GM, the oil pan gasket failed. Extended warranty covered it all, otherwise I would have had to cough up $600 I didn't have.

Don't know where you get that idea. My 2.7 Intrepid has given alot of cars a run for thier money. I trashed a Celica GTS on the highway just the other day as a matter of fact. I test drove a 06 Magnum tonight with the 250 hp 3.5 and it was even faster. Thing felt like a tank compared to my Intrepid. Well, actually I bought it after the test drive and I'm going to pick it up tomorrow. I got a good deal and bought an extended warranty. Tough to choose between the Magnum and the HHR..... The HHR is a neat little cruck.

This might explain it!! Our rental must have had the base v6:

For a base price of $22,495, the stripper Magnum SE delivers an encyclopedia of German rear-drive expertise propelled by a 190-hp, 2.7-liter DOHC 24-valve V-6. The Magnum SXT sends in the 250-horse, 3.5-liter SOHC 24-valve V-6 for $25,995. The R/T with the Hemi? It squeaks under 30 grand with a base price of $29,995 and an all-whistles tag of $36,820, including sunroof, curtain airbags, and navigation system. All-wheel drive arrives this fall.

Yeah, the Magnum SE is slower than My Intrepid SE because of more weight (about 400 lbs) and it is less aerodynamic. Plus the 2.7 in the Magnum has 190 hp vs. 200 hp in the Intrepid. I had a Charger with the 2.7 try to keep up with my Intrepid on the highway...he couldn't. Well, just hope the Magnum is as reliable as my Intrepid has been for the last 5 years. If not..well, I'll have the extended warranty...heh
