Decoding the VIN

Hope this is not a repost, I searched for the word "VIN" and nothing came up, which is hard to believe.

I am probably going to purchase a used HHR 2LT in the summer, and noticed that on autotrader they call LT1 & LT2 "LT" which makes it hard to tell which is which. Is it possible to get chrome trim on the LT1, or is that a dead give away? I know the 2.4L is available in the LT1.

Which number/letter represents the trim package on the HHR?

Found this in another thread..........

Without connecting to the manufacturer database, the VIN code itself cannot decipher:

1.) What color your HHR is
2.) If the series is a LT1 or LT2
3.) Automatic or Manual Transmission
4.) Any owner info or history

That is odd. I thought you could tell color & trim just by looking at the VIN. Damn, so I guess I will have to assume all LTs's have chrome trim. Is this correct?

I have a 2007 1LT with chrome package. So yes 1LT's can have chrome.

The bright chrome is standard on the 2LT, optional on the 1LT, and not available on the LS. Same is true for the fog lights.

Maybe you should shot a PM to PITTSBURGHHR. He seems to be able to work magic w/ VIN #s.

1LT's have 16" wheels and 2LT's have 17" wheels. That would be 1 way to decipher model.

Ok, well it seems I can look for 17" rims as an indicator, but I sent a PM to Pittsburgh anyway just to confirm this. Thanks.

I think we discussed this before as well but.....

I believe it was determined that a 1LT can be ordered, or at least after-purchase install, 17" wheels. So, it would not be an absolute.

But, the 2LT would have the "heavier" suspension in the REAR, which cannot be ordered on other models. Someone gave the assembly code, which I don't remember. It can be found on the "options sheet" glued to the inside of the glove box lid. But, you also can look under the car for the danger stickers, on each shock (thanks, SoCal Mike). "Normal" shocks will not have the stickers.

True it wouldn't be absolute but in the mainstream used car sales I would think most of the 17's would be on a 2LT. Suspenion would be best bet.
