Dex Cool Bad on GM Gaskets?

I've read that Dex Cool was found to be bad on GM gaskets and causing many leaks. There was even a class action law suit on this. However what I read was not specific on years.

As I read on, it seemed it was all mentioning vehicles from 2003 and older. Since the HHR came out in 2008, are our vehicles excluded from this and the issue corrected by then? 2008 may not even be the key year since the engines were probably used before the HHR came out.

Yes excluded. But..., change at 150K is critical. It's not so much Dexcool eating gaskets as the gaskets & heads are very close tolerance, and just do not have much room for wear. You should add some of the GM approved pills to the coolant, don't remember the correct name or number.

It was a gasket problem. The intake gaskets were plastic with rubber o rings GM used this design gasket from when the 3400 came out in 1994. I replaced intake gaskets on a 94 G/A 3400 and that used the old green coolant. I have also replaced many with dex cool but I don't think it is dex cool. The 4.3 and v-8 vortecs, 3800 series 2's and the 3100 & 3400's all used the same type of intake gaskets. They all need to be replaced. They will all start leaking coolant. It was a poor design using plastic. The bulletin has a new part# and it is a metal gasket similiar to the good fel pro's.

Thanks.....I did a search but did it with "Dex Cool" and not "Dexcool" as that link thread used.

Oh and no offense to the pre-2008 HHR owners. The incorrect year was an oversight on my part.

The truth is many people rush to judgement on Dex Cool before they have all the facts. The Cause and Effect are not always the same.

Dex Cool works fine if used properly. If you let it get weak it can be an issue. Also there were some gasket issues that were not the fault of Dex Cool but more the issue of the gasket itself.

If Dex Cool was bad every single car would have an issue but most never see a problem and many that do have issues created by an unrelated issue or poor use of the product.

Keep the mixture strong an to the right ratio and seldom is there an issue.
