Well they're not quite like that but they do stick out quite far. I got them from J.C. Whitney in 1986. First time I got on the interstate I knew they were a mistake. With a small breeze they would start going Whonng, Whonng, Whonng. It wouldn't go over 70 MPH really which is good because it was very light on the suspension at that speed.

 

I thought I read that the running boards were actually a solution early on to gravel from the front tire pelting the rear fender flair. Def worked cause I have no chips back there.
