Gas octane
What octane is everyone using in your 2.4's?
They say 87 is all you should use, but I have been running 89 the last 2 times. I have nothing special under the hood, only stock. Should I go back to 87 or stay with 89?

To briefly sum things up, it is a waste to use higher octane then necessary to eliminate engine knock. That said, it has been rumored that premium gas has better additives so it burns cleaner. The cost between 87 and 93 is only a few cents, so I have been using premium.
In the same vein, I was advised by my GM mechanic who I befriended that:
a) the engine oil used is special break in type, and it is best to change it earlier than the recommended time (I plan on doing mine at about 2500 miles)
and
b) it is best to use synthetic oil, like Mobil 1

As far as oil goes, no manufacture uses "Break in oil" anymore, that went out many years ago and what is in your car now is exactly what the manual calls for. With that said, in a new car I alway's do my first oil change at 500 miles. I do this just to get out all the crap that may be present during the break in and I replace both the oil and filter using fossil oil and a good filter. I drive another 1000 miles and then do another oil change this time using a good synthetic oil (M1) and again a new filter. After this I follow a regular oil and filter change beteen 7 and 10k.
Oh yeah, I've been doing this for over 40 years and have owned 400+ cars and have never lost an engine due to oil related issues, lost some from stupidity tho...LOL
