Calls for premium but alot of people use regular. Check out this thread:https://www.chevyhhr.net/forums/show...ghlight=octane

93
I'm sure regular unleaded may be fine, but I only use premium (93)...
performance is better in my opinion, mileage is supposed to be better (although I have not confirmed it), and I plan on keeping mine for a long time, so I am hoping the 93 is better for the engine...

Yes, I was told that but guess what I use 87% not 93% and mine runs fine I have had it for 1 yr tomorrow and I have over 36,000 miles on it. I think it also states that in the owners manual.

Gasoline Octane
If your vehicle has the 2.2L L4 engine (VIN Code F), use regular unleaded gasoline with a posted octane rating of 87 or higher. If the octane rating is less than 87, you may notice an audible knocking noise when you drive, commonly referred to as spark knock. If this occurs, use a gasoline rated at 87 octane or higher as soon as possible. If you are using gasoline rated at 87 octane or higher and you hear heavy knocking, your engine needs service.
If your vehicle has the 2.4L L4 engine (VIN Code P), use premium unleaded gasoline with a posted octane rating of 91 or higher. You may also use regular
unleaded gasoline rated at 87 octane or higher, but your vehicle’s acceleration may be slightly reduced, and you may notice a slight audible knocking noise,
commonly referred to as spark knock. If the octane is less than 87, you may notice a heavy knocking noise when you drive. If this occurs, use a gasoline
rated at 87 octane or higher as soon as possible. Otherwise, you might damage your engine. If you are using gasoline rated at 87 octane or higher and you hear
heavy knocking, your engine needs service.

I've been running 87 in my 2.4 with no problems. I do occasionally run 89 or 93 when the prices drop (give it a treat). With the higher octane, there is definitely more pep and a little better gas mileage. But for 10 - 20 cents difference per gallon, 87 works fine. Currently I'm getting about 19.5 - 20 MPG around town with no problems. As long as you keep your foot out of it, it shouldn't be a problem.

I use 89, havn't used just regular or premium so i can't really say I know the difference between any of them, but I get between 24-26mpg around town. (then again, I drive on the interstate alot >.> )

I've been using regular unleaded since day 1. I've filled up a few times w/premium to see if I noticed a difference in acceleration or gas mileage, but did not see a difference in either. My driving's pretty much split evenly between city & highway use, and using premium did not make a difference on either. I've had my HHR 16 months and have had absolutely no issues - with the engine or anything else!
