was gifted a HHR
Hi iGoya,
to the forums!
You need new speakers, pretty common problem here.
Go to your nearest auto parts store and get the codes pulled. Post them up here, just the codes, not descriptions, as they can be misleading. Let's see if we can point you in the right direction with regard to the sputtering.

Those codes pertain to the VVT solenoids. Here's the how-to(pretty easy job).

Re: P0010, while it could be a wiring problem or something else, after a quick look-over of the wires leading to it, simply replacing that actuator is a pretty good low-cost bet. There are two very close to one another; “A” intake, the one in the front.
I assume you have the base radio. I had two HHR’s with that. They both had speaker problems. I suspect the feeble radio ensures the demise of the low-grade speakers. If you want the budget fix and keep the original radio, you could just replace the front speakers with the cheapest aftermarkets you can find. They’ll be better that stock. Just set the fade all the way forward - more Watts for the front. I understand the tiny speakers in the pillars never fail. Mine haven’t.
Good luck! Looking forward to hearing about your results.
