I have lowered 5 s-10 trucks, a fullsize silverado, swapped an engine on an s-10, replaced transmissions, replaced exhausts, removed and replaced dashes (wiring and all). I have done brake pads, rotors, blah blah blah. I am not a mechanic, and most of this has been done in a driveway. I have needed help with most of them, but of all the crap associated with all of that stuff, I don't think I have come across a more stupid way to do something as simple as changing a freakin bulb. This should be the 100% most easiest thing for anyone to do. Everyone who owns a car should be able to fill their own gas tank, fill their own washer fluid, and change a light bulb. The retarded route the decided to go with is, in my opinion, another indication that they want to stop the average person from doing anything at all to their own vehicle and require us to bring it to the dealer for any repair.
I just find the way they made this very simple thing ridiculous. The rear couldn't get much easier, but that front is just dumb designing....

sorry, I just had to do it on my wife's 06 in the middle of 5 inches of snow on the ground, and I was just dumbfounded by the design...

 

Really is it all that difficult? Really?
I'm not a professional mechanic either, but I haven't found replacing the headlight bulbs all that difficult at all. Awkward, perhaps, but certainly not difficult nor retarded.

 

Yes, I say it is difficult for what the job is. To replace a bulb should be nothing more than lifting the hood, twisting the bulb socket out, replace the bulb, put it back in. There should be no need to turn the wheel so you can get to the inner fender, remove any little bolts or plastic rivets, and snake your hand through to do such a simple job. Thus making the design simply retarded. It would be like lifting the hatch to fill your gas tank.

 

It is not a difficult engineering feat to design bulbs easy to change. And yet Chevy has managed to make it more difficult than it should be. I am not worried about it.... nor do I care overly much. But it is dumb.

THe best design for bulbs I have ever seen is on a 1983 Mercedes 300. (this is the rear and side marker bulbs. Headlights are replaced as a whole, and simple to do as well)

 

I miss the old sealed beam headlights myself...... They would look so great on the HHR too.

But GM designed these lights this way just to get the majority of owners into the dealer for repair.... makes a few extra bucks that way.

 

A big fat round headlight would really look retro..hint to body panel fabricators.
