HHR on a long trip (2000+ miles)

My wife and I are planning our summer vacation. We're planning to drive from south TX to Yellowstone, back through Utah and then maybe over to Vagas for a couple days and then through Arizona to TX. We are planning to drive the HHR but we've never taken a trip in it longer then 200 miles since we bought it in August.

The question is, how does the HHR travel?
Any suggestions on things I should know or take?
Does the HHR wear you out driving all day?

Hey there wanna, I took my HHR down from Calgary Alberta to Zion National Park and onto the North side of the Grand Canyon during the summer of 2006. The trip was down I15 from the US/Canada border almost all the way to Zion. I did a similar trip the previous year except that we went through Arches National Park on to Toas, New Mexico and it was in a loaded 2000 Impala.

Both trips were done with three of my buddies and our gear (about the same amount of gear both times.) The HHR did provide less room for the rear passengers and the Impala was probably a little more comfortable. As for driving and getting worn out or tired I think the experience was about the same in both vehicles but I think the Impala was a little easier to drive. Overall, the HHR handles the road trips pretty well. Depending on how many people and gear you have you will need to pack it up very carefully (this is where Tetris from the good old days comes in handy.)

Enjoy the trip!

Here's a picture of the HHR with gear and my buddies:

You may or may not notice that we actually had to strap our folding chairs to the roof rails because they just did not fit.

On future trips I'd really like to have cross bars and a roof top basket like one of the other members here. It would be great for hauling the chairs, tent, bbq and burner and other things that can be placed outside during the drive.

It's just me and my wife for two weeks. I'm puting a hitch on the car this weekend and would like to find one of those plastic 'hitch boxes' but the ones I've seen are too big for the HHR and all are way over priced. However, after seeing what you did I doubt we'll need it.

What kind of mileage did you get?

I have over 17,000 miles on a 2006 2lt hhr. Approximately 12,000-14,000 of those miles would be considered "trip". Anything from a tour of 21 US States last summer to occassional runs to California at about 900-1000 miles per round trip. Then several shorter trips of 300-500 miles. The HHR was purchased specifically for this purpose. It has served me well with no problems.

You could put a Hitch on, and get one of those Motorcycle trailers, like someone has posted on here, (i.e. a trailer designed to be pulled by a motorcycle) looked cool for carrying your stuff, and looked lockable

I've driven the HHR from Florida to Maine. The ride is fine, great gas milage. I start cramping up after a while in my right leg using cruise. The center console blocks my ability to stretch the right leg out. With the great gas milage, I can drive more than 400 miles between fillups. My bladder doesn't last that long.
