Install of hood emblem

Got 2 "Chevrolet" metal hood emblems from Classic Parts, going to cut the post & use 3M tape,need to know the correct thickness to use and any other advise you can give. Thanks in advance.

Plenty of members have done this over the years, I haven't (like mine shaved)..
