I'm really starting to think that is a defect with the gate, and will ask the dealer when I go in for my car inspection in a few weeks, but in the meantime, I would like to know if any others are experiencing this. HMMMMMMMMM. I noticed the same thing about a year after I bought my '06 and figured it must have been something I did, but not sure how...

The dimples are on each side of the chrome piece above the license plate with no paint damage either, and they are exactly the same size on each side of the chrome. Like you, my car is garage kept and nobody else drives it. My car is out of warranty now, but it will be interesting to see if others speak up about this as well.

After reading how some of you guys close the hatch, I think this might be part of the problem. Slamming the hatch is not a good idea as it's the chief cause of hatch rattles. It also apparently seems to be causing these dents. So the solution is probably just to close the hatch without slamming it shut. Just a thought.

Mine also appeared next to the chrome bar however I always closed it way further down on the hatch normally below the plate just at the lip of the hatch. Who knows though I did have other people use the hatch a few times. I just happened to noticed a slight dent forming at the bar though and just started using the cup and so far so good the dent isnt any bigger and no new ones as well. It just seems that any pressure on the outside of hatch seems to cause the dents no matter where you push you at. I am now the only one to close the hatch I will go out of my way to make sure its done right. This reminds me of the problems minivans have had, basically the same thing little dents were you close it at. Seen it alot working at a rental place, however havent seen any other HHRs with it .

Or pushing on the Chevrolet emblem works too.

I wouldn't push there. That is the spot that causes the dents to each side of the chrome bar and above that area.

I like this thread. Everyone is learning it is a liftgate not a hatch.

Same way I do it.
It slammed a couple of times before my body became calibrated to the right amount of force to close it correctly.

Now it gets shut just right or almost so it doesn't slam.
When I fling it almost closed a re-open, slight lift and & light shove on the emblem gets it done.

Edit - Now that I've read that the emblem's a hands-off spot I'll try the plate next time

Some are just slow on understanding you can't push on the bar.

As for slamming it the gate will not close with out a swift closing on most of these, Also there is very little to rattle on the rear gate as everything is fairly secured to it.

The best option I have found is fling it down with the cup or use the plate to slam it but not push it shut. Let the momentum take care of the work.

The bar and emblem are strictly a hands off on shutting or pushing it closed.

Too bad it does not have the new Nox electric gate. I used one Saturday and it works great on the 2010.

Yeah, when I whip it closed, I've got it now so that I use enough force just to get it closed, not much more.

hey, Neznokca, I'm with you regarding dirty prints on the hood. Oily skin + dust = a divorce.

This sure makes sense and would certainly explain the mysterious dents. I never paid attention to the little liftgate holder until a few months ago. I have been using it, and have no further dimples. Thanks for the explanation
