Oh, and did anyone other than me note the 'Doghouse' in the background?

Its dissapointing to me that the 'Lift Gate' is so fragil, that it dents so easily. I was always pulling it down using the indented grab handle, then pushing it closed at the Chevy emblem. After reading comments on this thread, now I go for the license plate to push it closed, even though that part of the gate feels more flimsey. So far I see no dents in my 07, but again after reading the comments here, thats probably just luck. That bar that the Chevy emblem is mounted on, feels really solid, but again, comments here say that will cause the dents. I too wish it was a power gate, if for no other reason, just to avoid the dents.

Smile HHR Rear Lift Gate

While we were out shopping this afternoon I noticed an HHR sitting in the lot just up from our's. So I walked over to see how it was optioned out. As I walked around it I could not help but notice that there was a 2" crack in the lift gate metal at the end of the right side of the beauty bar ??
The HHR look's like it's been driven hard, almost bald tire's a big dent in both right side door's and the grill is cracked. There looks to be a spot on the leftside driver's door were there might have been a magnitic sign ?? I have seen several 123 Delerivy truck's around here and maybe this is one of them ?? Thus the reason for opening & closing the lift gate so much causing the crack ???? I felt sorry for that HHR....

Have looking at some of the HHR panels that are used commercially. Every one I looked at had dents on both sides of the bar on the lift gate. Guess I'll keep pushing on the license plate.

I noticed the hand hole when I bought it but it is on the wrong side. You see, I'm left handed.

I noticed mine the very first time I opened the lift gate. The hand hold cup fell right off. They had to order another one.

I like this thread. Everyone is learning it is a liftgate not a hatch.
I too, used to grab the hand cup and then push the liftgate closed on the Chevy emblem. My service manager at Sullivan-Parkhill Chevrolet in Champaign, Illinois told me this is a common issue on HHR's and that he has never seen one without the tell tale dent. What gets me is that this car seems to dent and ding easier than any car that I have ever owned.

They do seem to dent easly, and with no protection on the sides, they are pretty vulnerable to parking lot door dings. I've thought of trying to put a protective strip on the sides, but haven't found anything that I think looks decent. Anyone solved that problem?
