The reason they go out after 20 minutes is that your battery run down protection that is built into the BCM program is shutting them off. Eventually this is going to take out your battery. They should slowly dim soon after shutting the last door when exiting the vehicle.

I know. That's why I am trying to figure out how to fix it.

Have you tried waiting after a minute or two after starting up the HHR to push the buttons under the mirror?

Yes , have waited 1 min. 3 min.s 15 min,s > beleive me they will not go off under any circumstance . the only time they go off is after the 20 min. shutdown feature on these cars . does anyone know how to test the door switches , other than slamming one door at a time .
