The Cloyes and Melling sprockets do not seem to have these washer on their sprockets. And OEM sprockets are obsolete now!

The later balance tensioner is GM 28289946, said to be improved with a more spring tension. Listed for later 2.4 Ecotecs, 2014 Equinox, for example.

Did the OP’s car quit running ? Is this the reason for the chain replacement ?
Either way, I would be worried about bent valves. That much damage and slack in the chains leads to chains jumping a few teeth on the gears.
Get too far out of time you get bent valves or worse on an interference engine.

Hello, I must first put this out there. I have installed a new balance chain kit and also a timing chain kit from Cloyes. As the timing chain had obvious slack and the balance chain was also loose as well. So both have been replaced. The lower sprocket for the timing chain that came in Cloyes kit didn't fit over the keyway on the crankshaft. So I used the old one instead as it looked okay to use. Please let me know if the sprocket should be replaced as it looks it has material around it on both sides that has degraded in one spot. I'm guessing its for harmonic's? Yes my father is hard on vehicles. We didn't know about the "porous" block and the consumption rate of oil until starting this repair but now we do. Hopefully he will take better care of it after its all said and done.

The timing marks in the pic might scare some people but the engine has been turned over by hand to make sure it was smooth and no interference.

Porous block does not mean holes in the block. It means that after machining some bubbles get exposed. Not something to spend angst on.

Bingo! Thanks rlee63a4! That's defiantly one of the pieces and a part of the mystery solved! I wonder if the other piece came from there as well. The pic below shows what was left close up and the mark I used to time the engine.

The crankshaft sprockets look ok to use, you did reuse the balance shaft chain sprocket on the crankshaft, right? The Cloyes chain kit you ordered didn’t include new balance shaft sprockets, the one time you don’t think you need them , but that’s ok, I always order the 9-4202SX kit , no sprockets, saves money!

Yes! Oil pan is coming down. I'm expecting to find a lot of trash and the top guide the chain milled off should be down there too .

Thanks Blue! Glad to hear honestly and no sprockets were changed. Only cam gears with the VVT phasers.
