The HHR comes with organic oil....stock.
This is recommended for break-in. I use Castrol Syntec 15,000 mile oil
formulated for Volvo / BMW. Castro recommended that I put 2000 miles on the organic oil before changing to synthetic to allow the engine to seat.
I will run the oil for 10,000 between changes, and replace the filter more often as needed. Filter changes are very easy on the 2.2....
My 2 pennies worth.

There is NO BREAK-IN oil in your HHR. GM, nor many other vehicle manufacturers, haven't used "break-in" oil in years......and I mean a lot of years. So, that's a total myth
.
And for the other myth posted here....you can use synthetic oil from the get-go in your HHR. See this posting from GM, I did a while back.....

Lets see we bought ours with about 20,000 miles and around 90% oil life and at around 29,500 it said to change the oil. So it must be about 10,000 miles or so. Sounds good to me. I think I'll stick with the indicator thing!

BTW...the dealers service mgr told me to run the stock organic for 2000 miles
before switching to synthetic....who to believe anymore....

it s amazing the differance that two years makes...
not sure that Mobil is the reason that people were changing oil at 3/3000... car manuals... most mfg for years said to change and service at 3/3000 more often under HARSH driving conditions.
not all oil filters are mfg by a single company (i think i found at least four different mfgs two years ago)... even so... two filters mfg by the same company can have different specs. just going to have to dig a bit to find out who and how they are made... I currently use K&N oil & air filters... might use mobil 1 extended oil filters if they were ever in stock.
oil change intervals... two yrs ago i bought into the chevy dic oil life remaining... made good sense... back then about 90 percent of the opinion favored 3/3000 and i was the idiot for trusting/using the dic. well with over 20,000 miles, i have had two dic scheduled oil changes... thats a lot of bucks saved... the only unscheduled change was at 1500 miles (break in) and to switch over to mobil 1 syn.
just serviced my K&N airfilter 20,000 miles... early by K&N recommendations... could have gone another 20 or 30K. the filter was about 50 persent dirty. did it now because i was doing dress up on the shrowd.
i am sure as the cost of oil goes up there will be more converts from the 3/3000...
i change oil on my older engines... sb350(1970) and sb283(1957) more often than 3/3000... they are really DIRTY running engines... lots of blow by... moisture and particulate... todays engines are much cleaner running and can handle the extended life syns...
like i said what a difference a couple of years makes

two yrs ago i stated in a forum that i placed a very strong magnet on the oil pan or oil filter (if it was metal) to trap metal shaving/particulate...
the coment then was... "how does that work on an alumimium engine" anyone care to comment?
