Overheating
Btw, my 212 degrees was just a estimate at the time. It went much higher. My temps are usually in the 190's. All these suggestions did remind me that two or three times I have seen my temperature gauge not reading anything. I thought maybe it was because of the cooler temps right now but it happened at least three times so maybe I just have a problem with the engine coolant temperature sensor?
If the analog gauge and digital gauge don’t show a temp, it’s usually caused by the coolant not heating up fast enough from startup. That usually points to a bad thermostat. Will trigger a P0128 code.
Very small chance it’s the temperature sending unit.
If your temp goes to - - - F then you have a problem. Mine was due to the thermostat sticking open. this also shuts down the A/C from working. caused by temp not getting warm fast enough for the computer's liking. I know it doesn't make sense and you'd think it would be a temp sensor, but it isn't. replace the thermostat with a AC Delco unit or it will happen again too soon.
What do you mean estimate ? You have a numeric digital coolant temp gauge in the DIC display on your car. No estimates needed.

Thanks for all the suggestions.
Another symptom that I noticed today after it was idling for about 30 minutes the temperature went up to 217, the fan turned on and it still hasn't turned off after 45 minutes and the temperature has been holding at 168.
I haven't seen the dashes in the digital display today. Maybe just replace the temp sensor since it's easier to get at?
