HHR cooling fan low temp cut off?

Comes on at 217 deg f..... but stays on. Temp falls to 185 but fan stays on. Ac is not on, defroster is not on. Cooling fan should go off. Cooling fan will go off if I turn the car off for about 60 seconds and then start it back up.

Also it does seem like when I turn the AC on the fan kicks on and when I turn the AC off the fan stays on.

And again what I fully turn the car off and then started back up the fan is off, unless temperature gets above 217 or AC is turned on

Yours is normal the cut off is 180F. The t-stat is supposed to be 180F, so staying at 185F is OK.

The AC is on in defrost and recirc modes.

If you need an Owner Manual there is a link to a digital one in my sig.

yep and again the cooling fan never shuts off. it stays on.
the fan should cycle on and off, but once turned on at 217 degree f it stays on.

the only way to turn the fan off is to turn the car off and start it back up again.

i have searched and looks like i am the only one with this stupid issue. i guess i should be happy that the fan atleast kicks on. wish the low cut off worked... looks like after 07, mine is an 07, they went with a Fan Control assembly. when i search autozone for 07 hhr fan control they do not come up with an assembly they come up with this kit looking thing that looks like its got its on temp sensor relay etc... it looks like wire hack that would include my wirecutters... soldering and shrink tube.

If the coolant temperature cannot get to the cutoff(180*), then the fan will not turn off. Like Don said, yours is normal, according to your description of what you are experiencing.

Could be either a 190F t-stat or a bad t-stat. We have heard of parts places selling 190F. Or, your coolant is low. Or, the sensor is bad.

So if it doesn't get to 180F the fan won't turn of. There is no relay controlling the fan, it is handled by the computer. The SS does have a controller.

The book says relay #50 underhood is the cooling fan. I believe that is an error, but you can look for yourself.

ah, well the tstat is new. i bought it from O'Reilly's, i changed it when i got it due to check engine light.

so it uses coolant temperature to determine temp? no other temp sensors?
as i said the DIC shows coolant temp get as low as 178, coolant level is full.

well atleast 180 is cutoff the computer is looking for... and 217F is fine on the kick on temp seems.

maybe i will buy a more fancy scantool.

Is it at all possible that the kid at O'Reilly sold you the wrong t-stat? Or that their book is wrong?

What do you think a scantool will do in the absence of a CEL?

Check to see if you have a relay in position #50, if you do try pulling it to turn the fan off.
