I understand, I just had to replace the drivers side CV axle on my nieces, now she is complaining the other side is clicking.
But she doesn’t want to spend the money on her 10 year old car. Funny it’s been clicking for a few years now.

My very first car, a 1993 Ford Probe (shows how young I am XD) Had two clicking axles, both nearly completely missing the boots! You could literally hear the click from down the block it was so bad. I bought it for 300, put about 300 in parts to get it road worth, and it lasted about 9 months before the transmission took a crap.

And, As much as I love my HHR, I am getting into the mindset of your niece, though I wouldn't let a clicking axle go. Hell, Gregg is still kicking with 254K mile hubs and axles, assuming they werent changed prior to 135K.

Its not so much a click, that it is like a "clunk" of something trying to engage.

Side note, my axles, are on jack stands to make them in a straight line with the car, as soon as I was done with the lca, quick struts, axles etc, i put em on jack stands so they wouldnt sag while i was bleeding the brakes and doing the tranny pan drop
