Hi Folks, I am pondering buying a portable car port to go over my HHR during "acorn season". I have huge oaks in my yard, and this year I already have one small acorn dent. My last car was old and rugged, but still had maybe 10 dents on the topside from acorns in the fall. These trees are tall, so the acorns are small projectiles. I'd like to buy a portable carport. Basically a glorified tarp on legs. There are tons out there on the market, and I am at a loss for the right one.
Some questions if I may?
- Does anyone have one they like?
- How would you hold one down on a concrete driveway? Concrete filled paint buckets and rope?
- Would one of these collapse in a thunderstorm onto my car?
- Any well-known companies?

My car is housed during the workdays in an underground parking deck, but nights and weekends it lives outside. I hate to buy a new car, only to get dents from acorns. :-( Any advice would be appreciated.

I have one of these that I use for my SS quite often, got mine at Costco for 225$. it is 8X18 Dont forget stakes or sandbags for the legs.

I purchased an "E-Z Up" Speed Shelter a few years back, I think it was a 8' x 14'! Best in Quality! Gallon paint cans filled with quick crete and a 3/8" x 6" anchor at each post (4 or 6) depending on size! Ebay Link:

I've also seen tires w/ a plywood base filled with concrete used as hold downs (for "REAL WINDY" applications)! Install the anchor when the concrete is wet to one side of the I.D. as to not lose space while parking your ride under the shelter?

I personally wouldn't buy one of those. I bought one a few years ago I think it was 10 X 20. It was like $200 and it just didn't last very long. Between the sun, and the wind it just tore up the tarp material. I bought and put together an Arrow brand garage. It's 12 x 24, the kit delivered was like $1,700 but well worth it. It has a 6ft tall, 8 ft wide roll up garage door and a side walk-thru door. It is very sturdy, but that houses my other baby a 1966 Chevy II Nova.

 

I agree. I opted for a pole barn which is enclosed like the Arrow buildings.

You can go middle road and get a steel canopy instead. It's a little more pricey that cloth, but you get what you pay for. Northern Tool has steel units that will hold up for years.

The company was Sonoma. I just did a quick search and could not find one like it. As long as the legs were secured it help up to 35+ gusts. It has hook on sides, so if it is raining, you can put up the walls and it is like a little house. The only downside I can report is it's size. Even broken down, it was quite large.
