The drive by wire makes sense. I've always been told never to push the accelerator when starting a fuel injected engine, that's what got me curious.

A fuel injected vehicle might backfire if you give it fuel while cranking the engine. But when the key is in the off position, pushing the pedal does nothing other than give your right leg a workout.
