Screaming noise from left tweeter

Hi - totally new here, and not mechanically inclined at all, so car will go to garage, but wanted to see if I could get a heads up here.

2006 Chevy HHR, began making a low crackling sound around windshield this morning. I parked it all day, working. In evening, it went about 1 minute before starting a high-pitched screaming sound with an underlying soft crackling. It all seems to come from the left tweeter - if I put my hand over it, it diminishes. It is a physically painful noise. The sound will stop sometimes, but mostly it's like driving a tea kettle down the road. None of the warning lights are on, the car was recently worked on and I'm assuming that if there was a racoon stuck in there, the mechanics would have said something. The radio works and sounds fine, I assume I'm getting the sound through a different speaker. I've not a car or audio fanatic, so I've never paid any attention to the sound quality apart from "Okay, let's play this CD."

Any ideas?

Welcome to the site
Turn off the radio , does the sound change or stop?
are you taking it to a sound system shop?

When I turned on the radio briefly, there was no change in the noise - it continued and seemed completely separate from the sound of the radio - ie, I could hear the radio dj and songs and ads clearly, and the screaming noise didn't interfere with it.

I'm taking it to the dealership garage, as this is where I've taken it for everything bigger than an oil change for the past few years.

And you're sure it's from the speaker? Can you hear it outside the vehicle(louder)?

The door open chime comes through the drivers speaker on my 2008. I was looking to disconnect but when I found the noise was in the speaker system I left it alone.
Radio signal drops out at times from Fm switch to Am it's ok. wait awhile it's ok on Fm again?!
maybe not related to this post but it could be some type of warning buzzer coming through speaker(s).
Not like the old days

I took it to the garage, they replaced the tweeter and the driver's door speaker (once the tweeter was silenced, they could hear the speaker starting to go the same way). Now blessedly silent.

Thanks for the contributions! To answer the above questions - the noise continued while the car was stopped with the engine on, and even continued for a while after the engine was turned off and the key removed. While I was talking to the mechanic, with the car parked behind us and off, it started up again. It could be heard faintly from outside, but the real experience was inside the car.

HUMOR WARNING
Since you are a female it makes sense that the screaming comes from the driver side. Most married men complain about it coming from the passenger side.
END OF HUMOR
