Put it into first gear, that turns the traction control off in the j-bodies, maybe the same in the HHR.

I was afraid of that. I also have a VW Passat with traction control that cannot be turned off. What I to do to get rolling in a slippery situation from a standing stop in the VW, is to be very, very gentle with the accelerator, perhaps also even putting the trans into a higher gear to get a bit more traction with less wheel slip.
With front wheel drive cars (lots of weight on driving wheels) and reasonably good all-season tires you should be able to get moving with gentle accelerator action and a higher gear. Once you get moving your problem is solved. Trying to power out will not work because the traction control works against you, and not for you in that situation.

Well when I put it in the lowest gear, my traction control light came on. It's normally not on, unlesss its in the lowest gear.

Thats how you turn it off, put it in 1st.

That sucks! I want to turn it off on dry ground and I cant drive around in 1st all the time. Chevy should have put in a button or switch to turn it off.
