I remember whenI had my 91 Celica GTS....was getting crappy mpg...car felt lacking power etc..no idea why...at a Firestone place the guy asked me if I wanted them to replace my air filter..figured just another money grab so I said no...he called me into the bay and said loo at this...my air box was chock full of leaves, cotton, and everything else! Some critter was living in it!

Never underestimated the power of critters!

Most logical explanation is that the lid was left open at some point, probably before you took delivery. The rodent fell in and drowned, someone later closed the cap...end of story.
