temperature gauge on dash

just curious if this is normal. The temperature gauge on dash does nothing but move to the center of the gauge when the engine is running and is not in anyway related to the reading that are on the digital read out when you press the button on the steering wheel for my 2007 HHR LT. Just curious if this is normal.

You can check coolant temperature in the DIC , that is more accurate

The gauge is basically a fancy idiot light... It shows "Cold, Okay, and You Just Melted Your Engine"
