Question Ticking at startup and knock sensor

My HHR makes this ticking noise at startup and stops in a few seconds, not sure what causes it. Check engine light comes on periodically and goes off after a few startups, dealer said it was reading as a knock sensor problem but every time I get ready to take it in the light is not on any longer. car is at 99,000 miles and the 100,000 mile warranty ends at 100,033 miles. Would this knock sensor be covered?

Knock sensor isn't automatically faulty if its throwing a code. It could mean something else is going on and the KS is simply doing its job and throwing a code for it as a warning.

The ticking could be valves, fuel injectors, timing chain...

If its a really deep clunk/click, it could be a lifter.

However, judging by the knock sensor going nuts, my guess would be a chain tensioner issue.

@landis327, this is a great question for the warranty specialist at the dealership. By seeking their knowledge you will be able to get specific warranty information pertaining to your vehicle and situation.
