Since Oldblue brought up the idea of a tow dolly, has anyone done this? I'd like to do this so that I can tow my HHR, S10 or my Bug. Apologies for steering the thread off course.

Owners manual says no to the tow dolly.

I wonder what the logic is for a no to a tow dolly. Any one have any ideas?

Hmmm. Unless I'm reading it wrong, my owners manual says it is OK to dolly tow.

This from the manual:

Use the following procedure to dolly tow the vehicle from the front with two wheels on the ground: 1. Put the front wheels on a dolly. 2. Move the shift lever to P (Park). 3. Set the parking brake and then remove the key. 4. Clamp the steering wheel in a straight-ahead position with a clamping device designed for towing. 5. Secure the vehicle to the dolly. 6. Release the parking brake.

It seems the General can't make up its mind. Some manuals read like that, some like this.

Dolly Towing
Your vehicle cannot be dolly towed, but can be dinghy
towed. See “Dinghy Towing” earlier in this section.
Notice: Dolly towing your vehicle may cause
damage because of reduced ground clearance.
Always tow your vehicle using the dinghy towing
procedure listed in this section or put your vehicle
on a flatbed truck.

At least that explains the "why".

Hmm, go figure, ground clearance?

Since the HHR is a FWD car and the rear wheels just spin, there is nothing in the world to keep you from using a dolly. In fact, if you don't want to install a towing package on the front of your car, it is the only way short of a flatbed.

I would love to know the owner's manual author's reason for writing that. It makes zero logical sense.

Ahh, now I see George has found the correct entry. Knew it.

When you lift the nose by 6-8 inches you lower the rear by at least that much. Notice when backing out of a steep driveway.
