Towing?

Why does GM say you can tow up to 1000lbs with an automatic but you cant tow with a manual tranny ? All I want to tow is a small trailer with my crotch rocket or an occasional round bail for my horses.

Since you have a manual trans, you probably could get away with it but it would void your warranty if GM found out.

This is a section from the HHR Owner's Manual, Pp 4-34 and 4-35:

Towing a Trailer (Manual Transaxle)
Do not tow a trailer if your vehicle is equipped with a
manual transaxle.
Towing a Trailer (Automatic

Transaxle)

CAUTION:
If you do not use the correct equipment and
drive properly, you can lose control when you
pull a trailer. For example, if the trailer is too
heavy, the brakes may not work well — or even
at all. You and your passengers could be
seriously injured. You may also damage your
vehicle; the resulting repairs would not be
covered by your warranty. Pull a trailer only if
you have followed all the steps in this section.
Ask your dealer/retailer for advice and
information about towing a trailer with your

vehicle.

Your vehicle can tow a trailer if it is equipped with an
automatic transmission and the proper trailer towing
equipment. If your vehicle is not equipped as stated

above, do not tow a trailer.

First off, I have owned many vehicle with manual transmissions. Never once did any of them state in the owners manual “not” to tow with them – like what GM has (must not have any faith in their product). You just have to know your limits and the vehicles limits. My HHR is a 5-speed and I tow light trailers when ever the need arises (motorcycle, snowmobile, wave runners, my tractor, and so on). I have never had any problems towing with my HHR. You just have to make sure you have the load equally distributed and don't overdue it on the tongue weight. Besides, if you do screw something up it will most likely be the clutch, pressure plate, throw out bearing, or some other part the GM “Does Not” cover under the Drivetrain Warranty. Good luck in you decision.
