I like the design of the K&N not exposing the filter, and I can easily get access to the box to change an put on a new one. I typically change my K&N's ever other oil change, and take the filter I took out and clean it, oil it and get it ready for the next time.

Comparison or CGS vs. Air raid vs. K&N?

I know I saw a comparison between the CGS and the Air raid and if I recall correctly, the CGS won out and the air raid gave less horse power and less fuel economy. I'd like to see a similar comparison between the CGS and the K&N. I've used K&N in a few of my vehicles and like them, but looking at the pictures and the info on autoanything.com, I think I would leave the cover off and get more air.. This is one of the mods I'm considering for my H.. I'm happy with her so far.

That comparison was done by a former vendor that only sold the CGS intake so I wonder why the CGS won. That was the most biased, tainted, and incorrect comparison I have ever seen. I know of someone else (a more reliable source at that) on this board that independently dynoed their 2LT with the CGS and the CGS actually lost a couple of horses compared to stock. If I remember correctly the comparison between the Airaid and CGS was done before the K&N hit the market but trust me if it was out at the time the former vendor did the comparison the CGS would have beat the K&N too. I'm still not 100% convinced that any of the available intakes with the exception of the K&N are actually of any benefit to the HHR other than maybe making it sound better. If I were to purchase one my personal instincts would tell me to go with a more reputable manufacturer. How many millions of K&N products are on the road? I never even heard of CGS until I purchased an HHR. I'm still waiting for a true CAI for the HHR if one ever becomes available. If not I may just modify my stock setup a little. Time will tell. Given the three available choices without actually testing any of them myself and just using the little bit of knowledge I've picked up about vehicles over the years I would personally rank them:

1 - K&N
2 - Airaid
3 - CGS

K&N has graph on website done by Dynojet Research.
They used a 2006 HHR with 2.4L.
It shows 9.33hp increase at 5325rpm.

To be honest, I went with the intake change to have the ease of changing the filter. Changing the one in the stock intake is a real pain in the rear.
I went with the K&N because I am using that brand in other vehicles with success and have seen proven increase in MPG.

I didn't care for an exposed filter under the hood?
The K&N has the enclosed box, and you connect your existing intake to it.
When you are ready for a change, you just open the box at the top and change the filter or it makes it real easy to check it.

What I do with my vehicles is every other oil change, I replace the K&N.
Then I prep the one removed with a good cleaning/oiling, and have it ready for the next swap out. I know it's probably an over-kill.

I can believe K&N because it does seal the filter and doesn't draw in warm engine compartment air.

hey capt. are you referring to the super made-up graph of the supposed dyno? lol


I still remember the reasoning behind it...the info on the real dyno was too jumbled up and we wouldnt be able to decypher all that info.

For what it's worth I have the Airaid unit. I only bought it becuase it was used and I got it cheap. It works fine for me but I wasn't looking for out of this world HP gains...I never bought the HHR with dreams of tire shredding horsepower. I bought my HHR as a commuter vehicle that I thought I could hook up with some minor mods. With the limited aftermarket support this vehicle has gotten, I've given up on any desire for massive increases in HP...
