Took my car to the dealer on the problem mentioned in post #12846......key stuck in accessory mode, car in park. repair time was 1 hour 15 minutes, total. No cost because of the 15 year "Customer Satisfaction Warranty".

Of course, I called my Service Writer and spoke with him last Thursday. He reserved the part and made my appointment for today. My car was in the VIS by VIN with that and the lifetime replacement warranty on the steering motor, listed.

Happy camper.......

I fixed the auto cancel on the indicators - a 30 minute job and bought a keyless entry fob and programmer (60$ O'Reilly) and programmed the remote in under three minutes. Woo hoo, as the dealer quoted over 150$ for the same thing. Have owned the car for less than a week.

My GM dealer quoted me $105 for the key fob. I think that was programed.

A couple of years ago I bought a key FOB from eBay for $35.00. A GM dealer in Owosso, Mich charged me $45 to program it.

A question do Stick shifts have capability for remote start? My FOB for the stick does not have the button for remote start.

No remote start option on the 5-Speed HHR's from the factory Boydie, but there are aftermarket kits that can add remote starting to a vehicle with a manual transmission.

It's not often done, because you need to always park in Neutral and rely on the parking brake to hold the vehicle.

Then there is the need to install(or use the already existing) Neutral safety switch in conjunction with the remote starting kit.

As you can imagine, hitting the button with the vehicle in gear, will cause it to smack into something or someone with catastrophic results.

If you're even considering adding remote start to a manual transmission vehicle, have the installation done by a professional.

Back to O.T.

My '06 got rained on again today, but I filled it with gas, so that's all I did to mine today.

I loaded up plumbing repair tool box and a ten foot length of 1/2 inch copper pipe and went to Mother in Law's to fix burst pipe in her garage , seems she just had to rinse off the porch one last time last fall and turned the water supply back on!
Then forgot to shut off and drain the system when she was done, well it gave me a refresher on how the solder plumbing , it's been about 12 years since the last repair job!

I understand all that Mike. But with all the computer technology today auto manufacturers should be able to overcome all those obstacles and make remote start on manual an everyday item, especially since stick shifts are being produced more and more.

I also know with all the extra safeguards that should be used with a manual "hitting the button with the car in gear" would not start.

I also know buyer might pay extra for remote start on a manual.

If only the last half of your first sentence was true Boydie, but manual transmissions are going the way of the Passenger Pidgeon in the 19th Century. According to 2014 sales figures for the U.S. and Canada, the "Take Rate" or buyer preference for new vehicles equipped with manual gearboxes has stayed flat.

Depending on the vehicle class, manual transmissions account for only 5-8% of total sales, a number which has stayed basically flat for the last decade. And on some models, like the Corvette for example, shifting for yourself adds $1,725 to the sticker price.

If customers are becoming more shiftless(pun intended), there's very little incentive to spend the engineering dollars on a remote start equipped 5-Speed, when all John or Jane Q. Public really wants is more in car infotainment junk.

We're looking at a new Impala to replace either the Fiat or my 2011 HHR, and the first thing the salesman started going on about was "Bluetooth connectivity and Pandora Streaming.....".

Screw the radio, let's see what she's got under the hood fer crying out loud.

And there's people like me. No remote start on my 5 speed and I don't want it or have any use for it.
I get in, start the car and go. I can tolerate the few minutes of a hot or cold cabin depending on the season. I don't see the point of wasting my gas letting it idle.
Just my opinion of my own car.
