What Did You Do To Your HHR Today?
Cruised the HHR out to the golf course to play in a charity event. I was shocked to find out Hockey Hall of Fame Coach Scotty Bowman was in our foursome. What a great guy, The absolute highlight of my summer for sure.
I worked on my HHR Headliner Spider again today.
After tracing it out yesterday and trying to cut it out of the paper coated foam board I had on hand, I decided that stuff wasn't gonna work all too well, pressing on it left dimples for one, and it was a biotch to try cutting it out without the paper or foam tearing out.
So off to the auto fabric supply wholesale place near me with Spider in hand and an explaination of what I wanted to do.
This place has dozens if not hundreds of automotive, marine, and furniture foam.
So I came home with what was needed, 2 pieces, 2 different thicknesses.
This foam cut out real nice and I was able to control the xacto knives much better to follow the outside edges for better results.
Thicker one shown here all cut out as the Base Spider, and the thinner stuff will be used for some added details to the spider so it will be 2 or maybe 3 layers in the end.
Still unsure if it will be used or not yet.

Wish I had bought an extra yard of the suede to try a Practice one to see how it will look.
Oh well, I can always tear it all out and just do it flat with different headliner material right?

That's awesome. My dad was able to golf with Gerard Gallant of the Red Wings years ago, Did you get to hear all kind's of stories ?
Im a Huge Halloween Freak ...suprising I know ...but you also may want to consider the blue insulation foam sheets ... shame your not closer bud I have a heated wire foam cutter ...does a great job and actually cuts smooth AND hardens the edges by using just enough heat to compress the air from the foam. but all things considered man your doing a great job , I build props and I do not have the paitence to cut those angles LOL ... Glad I got a Skull fetish rather than spiders !

Look in my gallery for a few more pics.
My Dad actually had a couple of those hot wire cutters, he took a class on model railroads and bought them.
They work good, as you say, But, the trouble with the blue or pink insulating foams is they Dent. Great for Halloween props.
Think about it, the first time someone gets in the car and notices it up there, the First thing they are gonna do, even before you can say DON'T TOUCH! is Poke it with their finger. Leaving a dent.
The stuff I bought is from a automotive trim shop wholesale supplier so it's made for custom auto interior work. It bounces back, no dimples or dents.
The white foam board I tried at first, reminded me of the denting problem while cutting it out and my own fingers leaving dimples.
I wanted to do this Skeleton.

But you gotta remember you are wrapping cloth over your object so all Details are lost. Unless you wrap it, then airbrush it all in afterwards.
I found this on the web doing a Google image search, it would have been pretty cool, but funds are getting low to hire it out.
So thats why the Spider, easier (I Hope) to do overall. And this is my first time trying an embossed headliner.
Now I am trying to decide where to place it???

I still have to cut out another Spider in the thinner foam, same stuff just thinner, and use it in pieces glued on top of this spider to add in some details , that will add some depth to it and seperate the body parts some.
Notice my new front dome light is in and wired as well.
